Ultrasound power measurements and calibration of radiation force balances and ultrasound power meters
Ultrasound transducers and reference sources such as those produced by NIST and Precision Acoustics may be calibrated according to IEC61161. Total ultrasound power can be measured from as low as a few mW to more than 300 W and in the frequency range 0.5 MHz to 25 MHz. Powers below 1 W are usually measured on our Primary Standard Radiation Force Balance. Powers above 1 W are usually measured on one of our Secondary Standard Radiation Force Balances. For HIFU transducers, power can also be determined by measuring the thermal expansion of castor oil.
Calibration of diagnostic-level (below 1 W) power measurement devices is available by direct comparison with the Primary Standard Radiation Force Balance at frequencies up to 25 MHz. Calibration of therapy-level power measurement devices is by direct comparison with our Reference Therapy-Level Radiation Force Balance at powers up to 20 W, at frequencies up to 5 MHz
