National Physical Laboratory

Hire of Acoustic Facilities

A number of world class test facilities are available at NPL, and are used to deliver our research and measurement services. As national facilities, many of these are also made available for hire, or for use in consultancy work. Associated equipment is also available for hire along with facilities, as is the knowledge and experience of NPL's sound-in-air team.

Contact details are below if you would like more information on any of the facilities listed here:

Anechoic chamber

Anechoic Chamber

This wedge-lined room provides a simulated free-field environment, suitable for the testing of instruments and artefacts where such conditions are required. Typically measurements can be performed from 125 Hz up to 20 kHz.

Hemi-anechoic chamber

Hemi-Anechoic Chamber

Has a similar wedge-lining to the anechoic chamber, but utilises a hard floor as a highly reflecting ground plane. Typically, measurements can be performed from 125 Hz up to 20 kHz. This space also provides a general purpose test environment benefiting from exceptionally low levels of background noise.

Duct

Duct

A plane wave duct with an anechoic termination for measurements below 100 Hz.

Reverberation room

Reverberation Room

The reverberation room provides a diffuse sound field. It can be used for measurement of absorption coefficients, ear defender attenuation, sound power measurements as well as a range of custom requirements.

Listening room

Listening Room

The listening room simulates a domestic space and can be equipped with a range of sound measurement, recording and analysis systems. It can be used for psycho-acoustical tests, hearing tests, or sound or speech recordings.

Pressure chamber

Pressure Chamber

The pressure chamber allows testing of instruments and artefacts over a range of pressures around ambient, meeting the requirements of the IEC standards for testing of both sound calibrators and sound level meters.

Humidity chamber

Temperature and relative humidity chamber

This temperature and relative humidity chamber allows testing of instruments and artefacts over a wide range of conditions including those required in the IEC standards for testing of sound calibrators and sound level meters.
