Acoustical measurement consultancy
A wide range of consultancy services are available, from solutions to specific measurement problems, to the bespoke design of complete primary calibration systems.
NPL has one of the largest UK research groups in acoustics, and many experts in the group are leaders in their field. Clients can access this expertise directly, through our range of specialised consultancy services that will be adapted according to a customer's specific requirements.
Consultancy services can be carried out in our range of acoustic facilities or on-site, as required by the application. Typical consultancy services offered include: sound power measurements; absorptivity measurements; wind noise on microphones; assessment of transducers, speech recording; subjective audio evaluation; legislative noise monitoring for architectural planning; machinery and product noise; environmental noise monitoring; acoustic characterisation and quality.
Please note that NPL does not perform routine acoustical surveys or noise measurements, as these services are readily available commercially.
Specific examples of consultancies that have been undertaken in the past include:
- Design of specialised acoustical facilities
- Design of bespoke acoustical calibration systems (e.g. primary and secondary calibration facilities of other national laboratories)
- FE modelling of transducers and other acoustic/mechanical structures
- Development of novel measurement techniques to solve specific problems
- Provision of acoustics experts to the government and media (TV, radio, press)
- Development of instrumentation
- Testing and characterisation of sound level meters (note that routine calibration or verification is no longer offered as a UKAS accredited service)
- Mapping modes / displacement profiles of vibrating surfaces by laser interferometry
- Characterising Acoustic Emissions sensors
- Provision of acoustics experts for education / training purposes
