Performance Verification of Acoustical Measurement Systems - Technical Guide: Scope

This document is a good practice guide on the performance verification of complete acoustical measurement systems.

The aim of this guide is to inform users of acoustical measurement systems, especially bespoke systems, of the appropriate precautions and testing that they should consider undertaking to avoid pitfalls in their measurements.

It provides practical general guidance covering verification and calibration; the importance of verification; testing, specifically filters, FFTs and frequency responses; when to perform check measurements; and calibration guidance.

It also contains practical examples given by consultants in the field as a means to demonstrate the types of verification tests that ensure that the measurement system is fit for purpose.

The guide does not replace any standard for performance verification of acoustical measuring equipment.

The guide has been developed for the DTI by NPL in collaboration with colleagues at AVI Ltd., and Birmingham City Council, as part of the NMS Acoustical Metrology programme 2004-2007.
