Machinery Noise Guide: Future for the standards
Long term revision of the standards
In the long term it is intended that there is a comprehensive revision of the basic series aimed at removing systematic differences between the methods, combining some of the standards to eliminate the distinction between methods of different precision grades and substituting methods by which a desired measurement effort can be selected leading to a specified precision, and for providing a full uncertainty budget. An outline plan for research to achieve these goals has been drawn up by the ISO working group and will include the following:
- Establishment of a method for determining the true sound power level of a noise source and comparison with all the existing standards methods
- Investigation of potential errors in deriving the environmental correction
- investigation of sources of difference between results obtained of measurement surfaces with different shapes, especially allowing for noise sources having different directional patterns of noise emission
- Establishment of a realistic value for the uncertainty associated with the measurement instrumentation
- Draw up realistic uncertainty budgets from all the above
