Once again, NPL has been successful in the RoSPA Research & Development Sector Awards, winning the President's Award (for 13 consecutive Gold Awards) in 2015. This continued level of recognition demonstrates NPL's commitment to the continual improvement of health and safety.
Through positive support from management, well-trained staff and efficient systems, we maintain a high level of Health and Safety performance on site.

European Physical Society Historic Site Award 2014
The birthplace of atomic timekeeping
The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has been officially declared the birthplace of atomic timekeeping by the European Physical Society (EPS). The announcement was made during a dedicated event at NPL in Teddington on 31 January 2014 and a plaque commemorating the historic occasion was unveiled. The award recognises NPL as the place where the first practical atomic clock was built, a landmark which has changed global timekeeping and made modern communications and location services possible.
Institute of Physics (IOP) Best Practice in Professional Development Award 2012
NPL has been awarded the Institute of Physics Best Practice in Professional Development Award for 2012-2016, in their large organisation category. This award gives public recognition to companies who demonstrate best practice in the training and professional development opportunities for their staff. NPL previously won the award in 2009 (- 2012), so it is a great achievement to have retained it.
MTA Manufacturing Industry Awards 2012
Best Training Scheme award
NPL received the Best Training Scheme award in recognition of the measurement training programme it has developed. Companies to benefit from the training programme include Rolls-Royce, Airbus and Hexagon Metrology, and more than 650 learners completed NPL Training.
The purpose of the MTA Manufacturing Industry Awards is to highlight key successes in the engineering based manufacturing sector and celebrate achievement and innovation.
Go Green Richmond Upon Thames - Advanced Award
The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames has awarded NPL a Go Green Richmond upon Thames Advanced Award.
Go Green Richmond upon Thames recognises good practice through a tiered accreditation scheme.
NPL undertook a specialist review on energy, waste, water, travel and procurement to reduce the significant impacts of our business. NPL implemented the recommendations and reduced the impacts across two areas to achieve the award.
NPL receives not one, but two ticks!
Jobcentre Plus has approved NPL to be a user of the Two Ticks Disability Symbol
This means that NPL is committed to employing disabled people and will:
- Interview all applicants with a disability who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and consider them on their abilities
- Ensure there is a mechanism in place to discuss, at any time, but at least once a year, with disabled employees what can be done to make sure they can develop and use their abilities
- Make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment
- Take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make these commitments work
- Each year, review these commitments and what has been achieved and let employees and Jobcentre Plus know about progress and future plans

Excellence in Work Experience Award (large company category)
The IEBE leads the way in providing links between the worlds of business and education to offer young people a rewarding and realistic introduction to the world of work. The awards celebrate the significant impact businesses have on young people's learning and achievement.
NPL won this award because of our innovative approach to work placement, specifically with respect to the NPL Academy.

The IOP award gives public recognition to large organisations that visibly demonstrate best practice in the training of physicists through the effective use of their training resources.
This award cited the excellent work that NPL has done particularly in our mentoring scheme, outreach activities, secondment and scientific recognition schemes.
The award recognises NPL's commitment to continuing professional development and to engaging, inspiring and supporting all staff to achieve their full potential.

The Centre for Carbon Measurement at NPL is partnering with National Grid and Nesta to find innovations that shift electricity usage to off-peak times. The Dynamic Demand Challenge Prize, run by Nesta's Centre for Challenge Prizes, aims to find new ways of shifting electricity use to off-peak times, reducing carbon emissions and better responding to demands on UK energy supplies.
IET Innovation Awards - Measurement in Action
NPL sponsors the Measurement in Action category of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) Innovation Awards.
The IET Innovation Awards celebrate the products, technologies and processes that lead the way in engineering innovation, and the NPL sponsored prize is a great opportunity for businesses to demonstrate the positive impact that accurate measurement can have.
Previous winners for this category include the University of Tasmania, Imperial College London, the Natural History Museum, Lakehead University and AMIRA International for their analytical mineral prospecting tool (2014), and Cascade Technologies for their Online Leak Detection Systems for Aerosol Production Lines (2013).
British Physics Olympiad
NPL sponsors prizes in theoretical and experimental physics at the British Physics Olympiad, which has run for over 25 years and is entered annually by around 1,000 talented students from schools across the country.
The competition aims to challenge and reward the best physicists in British schools and to select the UK team to enter the international competition.
