Alex Jones, Principal Scientist in Biometrology, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Daphne Jackson Trust where he will become a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee and Chair of the Awards Assessment Sub-Panel for Engineering & Physical Sciences.
He originally joined the Trust’s Award Assessment Panel in 2019, which comprises a range of subject experts and considers Fellowship applications on a quarterly basis.
The Daphne Jackson Trust was established in 1992 in memory of Professor Daphne Jackson – the UK’s first female Professor of Physics. Daphne Jackson recognised the loss of talent when individuals took a break from work and ended up in relatively low-skilled positions due to a lack of recent experience. Over the years the Trust has placed nearly 500 Fellows in research institutes across the country giving them the confidence and experience necessary to return to work and saving over 1250 years’ worth of research experience from being lost.
The Fellowships now support returners across all areas of research and provide the retraining and mentorship needed to successfully return to research after a career break of two years or more taken for family, caring or health reasons.
Alex Jones, Principal Scientist, said: “This is a real honour. The Daphne Jackson Trust plays a vital role in ensuring the UK research community retains talented individuals who haven’t taken a linear career path. I whole-heartedly support its aims and look forward to playing a more active role in helping the Trust achieve them.”
Katie Perry, chief executive at the Daphne Jackson Trust foundation, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Alex will be joining the board at the Daphne Jackson Trust. He is already a valued member of our Awards Assessment Panel and we look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role as Trustee.”
